SpaceX is set for another test flight of its Starship spacecraft

Seven months after the last attempt to test-fly its Starship spacecraft ended in an explosion, SpaceX is getting ready for another one. This Saturday, November 18, is the planned launch date from SpaceX's Boca Chica, Texas, Star base facility.

The May 2023 test flight was only partially successful. The Starship managed to ascend to about forty miles before an engine failure sent it hurtling out of control and exploding. The incident resulted in no injuries.

Since the last test flight, SpaceX has made a number of design modifications to the Starship, one of which was to add a sizable water-cooled steel plate to the launch pad in order to avert another explosion. The software that manages the Starship's engines has been enhanced, according to the company.

For SpaceX, the impending test flight will mark a significant turning point. If it goes well, it will open the door for the Starship to conduct a crewed orbital test flight in 2024. SpaceX intends to visit the Moon and Mars with the Starship in the future.

The following are some important specifics regarding the next test flight:

  • Saturday, November 18, from 7 to 9 a.m. CST (1300 to 1500 GMT) is the launch window.
  • Launch location: Boca Chica, Texas's SpaceX Star base
  • The goal is to ascend to a height of roughly 100 miles before landing back on Earth in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Starship: The Starship is a completely reusable launch system made up of a Starship spacecraft and a Super Heavy booster. The Starship is intended to travel to orbit and beyond, and the Super Heavy booster is what lifts it off the ground.
