Nepal banned TikTok on November 13, 2023. The ban was imposed by
the government of Nepal
On November 13, 2023, TikTok was outlawed in Nepal. The Nepali government enforced the ban, citing worries about the app's detrimental effects on social harmony and the dissemination of offensive content.
According to the Nepali government, TikTok is being used to
promote violence, disseminate hate speech, and take advantage of minors.
Additionally, the government claimed that propaganda and false information were
being disseminated via the app.
Reactions to the prohibition were not uniform. Some defended
the ban, arguing that it was required to preserve the social cohesion of the
nation. Some others denounced the prohibition, claiming that it violated the
right to free speech.
Users of the well-known social media app TikTok can make and
share quick videos. Over 1 billion people use the app regularly worldwide, with
roughly 1 million of those users coming from Nepal.
The most recent in a string of limitations on social media
in Nepal is the ban on TikTok. A number of other Chinese apps, such as WeChat,
Weibo, and UC Browser, were outlawed by the government in 2020.
It's not clear how long TikTok will be prohibited. The
Nepali government has declared that it will periodically review the ban.
